Producer's Guild Gets Their Green Act Together
Los Angeles & New York (August 2010) Earlier this month, The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced the launch of the Green Production Guide, an interactive website which provides the production community with access to a database of environmentally-sensitive products and services from vendors and service providers nationwide. The web-based Green Production Guide (www.greenproductionguide.com) offers film, television and new media producers with easy-to-access resources to help them operate more sustainable productions.
With seed funding and support provided by Disney, Fox, NBC Universal, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Warner Bros., the PGA, as part of its PGA Green Initiative, has developed this tool for the production and entertainment community to further its goal of integrating sustainable practices into its operations and reducing the environmental footprint within the production process. The Green Production Guide will also be via a link on www.PGAgreen.org."I strongly believe that sustainability needs to be part of our everyday
vernacular, and I'm extremely proud that the industry has successfully
collaborated to launch the Green Production Guide," said PGA President
Emeritus Marshall Herskovitz. "We are grateful for the tremendous studio
support behind this vital initiative, which has the ability to effect
tangible change and advance sustainable solutions."
"The Producers Guild, led by the passionate and dedicated PGA Green
Committee, has worked very closely with the entertainment community to
launch the Green Production Guide," said PGA Executive Director Vance
Van Petten. "We're confident that the Green Production Guide will be an
invaluable tool to everyone in the business, from producers to studios
alike."The main functionality of the site will be access to the vast global database of vendors that offer sustainable or environmentally-sensitive services and products. The more than 1,500 initial listings available at launch were referred by production representatives who had positive experiences with products and services on past productions. Both producers and individual companies will be able to submit vendor profiles and sustainable goods and services offerings to the site for consideration and inclusion on an ongoing basis. The site will provide various information and resources, such as a carbon calculator, that producers and others may use to independently decide on how to better monitor and measure production carbon emissions. The Green Production Guide is part of an ongoing commitment by the entertainment sector focused on advancing sustainability. In addition to the vendor site and carbon calculator, environmentally-minded leaders from around the industry have recently formed the Green Production Alliance, created to collaboratively advance sustainability in the motion picture and television industry. The Alliance is a network of industry professionals committed to advancing environmental practices in the film, television, commercial, and new media communities. The Alliance will offer a forum for sharing environmental information and ideas, developing voluntary common-use tools and resources, and providing educational and training opportunities.About the Producers Guild of AmericaThe Producers Guild of America is the non-profit trade group that represents, protects and promotes the interests of all members of the producing team in film, television and new media. The PGA represents over 4,300 members

Western Climate Initiative Moves On, Goes Forward
U.S. states and Canadian provinces take up the slack where their respective Federal governments dither and delay on climate change action. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger met with the British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell, where they discussed mutually important issues including energy and the environment. The following photo was taken in the Governor’s Office at the State Capitol in Sacramento, California earlier this month. Photo credit: Justin Short. The WCI was launched in February 2007 by the governors of Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington to develop regional strategies to address climate change. The initiative expanded to include the states of Montana and Utah, and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. The partners set a regional goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent below 2005 levels by 2020. “The detailed plan for a regional carbon market released today [July 27] by the Western Climate Initiative reminds us that states—and provinces—are ready, willing and able to lead the way to a clean energy economy in the absence of federal leadership. “This plan has been in the works for many months, but the timing of its release coincides with frustrating news that the chances of the U.S. Senate passing a comprehensive climate and energy bill this session are slim. - Erin Rogers, manager of the Western States Climate and Energy Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS).
The Western Climate Initiative is the largest climate collaboration in North America, representing 3/4 of Canada's economy and 50% of all greenhouse gas emissions in Canada.
When implemented, the WCI program will be the most comprehensive carbon-reduction strategy adopted anywhere in the world. It is “economy-wide,” meaning that all sectors – energy, industry and transportation – participate in addressing climate change as well as receive the economic benefits. Together, the seven states and four provinces that make up the WCI represent over 20 percent of the U.S. economy and 70 percent of the Canadian economy.
Ian Bruce writes on David Suzuki's website that: This could be the most significant blueprint for climate change emissions reductions in North America, as long as the partners, including B.C., Ontario, Manitoba, and Quebec, close several major loopholes in the regulations...Read MORE

In related news, California is out ahead of the U.S. pack when it comes to clean-tech investment. As reported in L.A. Times Blog by Tiffany Hsu, "Venture capital investment in clean-tech companies for the second quarter hit $1.5 billion -- a 63.8% increase from the same quarter in 2009 and the highest amount since the third quarter of 2008, according to Ernst & Young. And again as reported in L.A. Times Blog: "Solar companies ended the quarter with 182.6% more funding than in the same period in 2009. Of that $438.8 million pot, Brightsource Energy Inc. of Oakland tucked away $180 million." And with $265.7 million, biofuel firms saw a 517.2% boom compared to last year." Solar and Electric vehicles seem to be the darlings of the day with Israeli/ Palo Alto-based A Better Place recently scoring $350Million in Funding. Follow Us On Twitter@GreeningHollywd

Sweat Shop Paris
It's been a few years since we first came across the Linkle sewing café in Berlin, but recently we saw a like-minded establishment in France: Sweat Shop, in Paris.
Aiming to facilitate the DIY movement in the world of clothing, Sweat Shop offers 10 workstations equipped with Singer sewing machines as well as a central communal table. Amid a relaxed atmosphere featuring funky furniture, hot beverages and organic treats, sewing enthusiasts can come and go as they please, paying rates of EUR 6 per hour to rent a machine or EUR 25 for the day, including tee and coffee. A series of weekly workshops on sewing and knitting techniques are also available, ranging from EUR 20 to EUR 80 per class. American brand Singer sponsored the sewing machines; Sweat Shop also sells kits including everything necessary to create a particular item of clothing, according to a report in the New York Times, with prices ranging from EUR 30 to EUR 100.
Given the continuing interest in all things DIY, there are still plenty of opportunities to facilitate the customer made trend among crafters in other parts of the world. Time to offer—or sponsor—some “stitch & bitch” sessions in a cozy being space near you...? Website: www.sweatshopparis.com
