Greenwashing Makes Me Feel Dirty...

  By jourdan

People For Green Justice

Why does it seem if one does it, they all do it OR they pretend to?  As the “Going Green” campaign has gained popularity we have to examine what popularity turns into in society.  Sometimes something real and meaningful, such as caring for the environment, can be turned into greed, fame and power.  It’s like when everyone starts to follow a fad, but you know who the posers are.  Like McDonald’s Europe changing their logo to green.  They really think we’re stupid.  And I guess they would be right according to their accounting books.

http://enviralment.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/greenwashing.jpg

My fear about greenwashing is that it will create a public of distrust which in turn will cause a disservice to the legitimate green movement.  As a consumer I like for my shopping to be made easy.  I’m guessing most people do. When I walk into a store and make the decision between regular cleaner A or green cleaner B, I want to be confident that reading the label is all I need to do to feel secure in my choice.  Finding out that the product is not actually eco-friendly or at least not as eco-friendly as they claim, just sends that cartoon steam out of my ears!  As a public, how are we supposed to make informed decisions if we are being duped by companies at every turn.  And we all know how once you get screwed you don’t forget and everyone else pays for that.  Everyone wants to jump on the green bandwagon and make a buck.  Where is your conscious?  Do you have a family and friends?  How are so many people involved in getting these products and campaigns out to us and they are okay with it?  I know that if I worked at Company X and knew they were putting a product out there and not being truthful, I would report it and blow the case wide open.  I know, I say that, but I’m sure the men in black suits would have me offed immediately.  If any of you have knowledge of greenwashing going on you should let the public know.  Or you can tell me and I’ll blast them.  Remember, you get to stay anonymous with Green Justice!

We can’t be confident in any company claiming to be green without doing our own research first, which sucks because um, I’m busy and if the label claims eco-friendly than I want it to be freaking friendly!  I came across this site where people can post and rate marketing ads that are declaring their newfound “greenness.”  Take a look at how many ads there are.  And if we can’t trust any of them, I’m sad to think we’ll become overwhelmed and return to the ways of not caring because it’s too much work.  I’m not trying to be a downer, just realistic.  You know it’s true.  I’m sad one of the ads is the Audi Green Police, but I totally understand.  I liked the ads and the idea of green police, but it is ironic to have it coming from a car manufacturer.  After the ad aired during the superbowl I checked out their YouTube channel and comments were not praising them at all.  Lots of angry name calling went on.  Guess that didn’t quite work out how they thought.  Oops.  I hope we don’t completely discredit the green movement with greenwashing.  Let’s crack down and let these companies know we won’t stand for it.  If you have a tip, submit a claim today!  Read More Here >>>>

Climate Change A Matter Of Global Security

by Joe Magee

What is more dangerous, climate change or terrorism?

We are all too familiar with the consequences of terrorism and few deny the earth’s climate is changing.  In today’s social discourse both ideas are loaded and politicized.  Neither phenomenon is universally defined and the approach to each is emotional and controversial.

Consider the causalities of each to determine which is more dangerous. As expected there is a fair amount of difficulty in calculating how many people die from either terrorism or climate change. The data is far from perfect, but is important to compare the threats each pose. Unfortunately, both suffer from ambiguous definitions and each is riddled with disagreements of their effects. For instance, some figures include fatalities in the war zone of Iraq when considering terrorism. Others might consider deaths from hunger as circumstance of climate change.  Conversely, terrorism might occur in a war zone while malnutrition can be a result of climate change.

Joe Magee is the co-founder of PineMark.com, a Southern California based environmental start-up. PineMark is the first green lifestyle certification, think LEED for people. The Body Count:

In the Anatomy of a Silent Crisis, released by the Global Humanitarian Forum, it is estimated that 300,000 people die per year due to climate change. This is a conservative estimate that mainly accounts for weather-related disasters such as drought, floods, heat waves, desertification, and rises in sea levels.

The Worldwide Incidents Tracking System, a counter terrorism database, recorded about 11,400 deaths as a result of terrorism in 2009 and 15,800 in 2008. The National Counterterrorism Center that operates the database defines terrorism when “groups or individuals acting on political motivation deliberately or recklessly attack civilians/non-combatants."

The Problem:

If climate change is predicted to kill almost 25 times more people than terrorism, why does the US spend upwards of 15 times more money on combating terrorism than researching climate change? ($55 billion projected in 2011 on counter-terrorism versus a yearly average of $3.4 billion spent on climate change research and technologies). The fact is 99% of causalities relating to climate change occur in developing nations. It is an absolute tragedy that 50 of the least developed nations emit less than 1% of the world’s carbon (Anatomy of a Silent Crisis). The media and our government share some responsibility for the perception of these problems. Regardless, as global citizens we have a duty to be informed about the consequences of our actions.

It is expected that the US would dedicate more money to counter-terrorism. The United States has an obligation to protect its citizens and the immediacy of terrorism is a grave threat. However, if the numbers tell us anything about climate change, it is that we need to dedicate more resources to its solution. Domestically we might not experience the adverse effects of climate change for a few decades. This is all the more reason to start addressing the problem immediately.

The Solution:

The unpredictable nature of climate change and terrorism make them difficult to prepare and anticipate. In addressing these issues one would hope for better data and analysis because both are linked much more closely than previously thought. The Pew Charitable Trust recently created a separate institute to discover the intersection of terrorism and climate change; I previously posted the video they released, Climate Patriots. This is at the crux of solving these global issues. No matter what your political views or how you previously felt about “global warming”, climate change has a direct link to terrorism. The fact is that climate change creates disasters; disasters create civil unrest, and civil unrest breeds terrorism.

Terrorism and climate change are not so far removed from our daily lives. It boils down to how we as a community view and address these issues. You do play a role in their solutions. We, as citizens of the greatest country in the world, have an obligation to demand the truth and be informed of the causes and consequences of both climate change and terrorism. Try to step back from your preconceived notions of each and search out different points of view, weight conflicting statistics, and always consider the source of your information. The more these issues are discussed, argued, and challenged the more transparent they become and progress is made.

Greening Malibu: Malibu's Rising Tide

By Sara Marie Paul

Malibu, March 13, 2010  - Last Saturday CSA rocked the house at event for Kofi, long-time Malibu resident and record-producer, who is running for Malibu City Council.   We were asked to donate some food, however, I decided to take it to the next level.  I brought the healing arts!  I rolled in there with 5 chefs, including myself, 2 healers….3 counting Angel, and about 20 of my eco warrior buddies.  After listening to the presentation about the environmental issues in Malibu, I began to realize more about my mission here on Earth.   With 15 years experience in gathering people and resources, it is finally all coming together.  It’s all about enjoying life and being together.   I sang my heart out with the violin guy!  He was so great.  And of course Point Dume was amazing.  I look forward to my return.

Mac Africa Oscars Viewing Party
My long-time friend, Mac Africa, put on her 11th annual Oscars viewing party at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday afternoon. There was a silent auction and 5-course-meal. I popped in there with my eco kids just in time to see The Cove win for best documentary, which was the highlight of my night.  I saw the film at Sundance last year and spent some time with the cast and crew.  And even though I am a food warrior and Food Inc. was up against them, I was still rooting for them to win.   How could anyone kill a dolphin?   We are in serious trouble if that doesn’t change soon.

Alive Expo Green Pavilion is an eco-luxury education suite that takes place during Oscars, Emmy’s, and Sundance.  I’ve been working with these women for the last year and have helped to enhance their event with great food. Here we are for the 2010 pre-Oscars event at the London Hotel.  I was so swamped all weekend!  Stephen Bender, the new superman, said that that our blood oranges "were the best swag he every got!"  My friend, who hooked up the 360 vodka, was mixing it with wheat grass!  And they had gin too, which I have to say tastes very good with wheat grass.   I never took an interest in gin because I hate tonic water.  After seeing that it has high fructose corn syrup, now I know why.
The room had a decent buzz and my daughter Angel and her pals Cree and Jai had a blast.  They are the next generation of eco soldiers!

Each month Sen. Pavley recognizes a business in her district that is dedicated to preserving our environment by living and working responsibly. This month she's "proud to announce that I presented an Environmental Sustainability Award to Vision Industries in Santa Monica."

Vision Industries has created a zero-emission engine for cars and trucks. They have dedicated themselves to being in the forefront of eco-friendly technology by developing a hydrogen fuel cell hybrid-electric truck. This has proven beneficial to the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles and the state of California in their goal to be national leaders in the use of eco-friendly technology. Vision's efforts in reducing the amount of air pollution created in this state are truly admirable and help set the standards for other businesses.

Greening Beauty: Procter And Gamble Goes On An Un-Diet For A Poisoned Planet

SAN FRANCISCO - Procter & Gamble (P&G, NYSE: PG) will reformulate 18 shampoos in its Herbal Essences line to reduce levels of the cancer-causing chemical 1,4-dioxane, according to a preliminary agreement reached between P&G and David Steinman, founder of the Green Patriot Working Group and author of Diet for a Poisoned Planet. Product tests conducted by Steinman revealed that an Herbal Essences shampoo contained 1,4-dioxane levels of 24 parts per million (ppm).

http://pureintuitiveskincare.com/images/BeautyToDieFor_200.jpgP&G agreed to reformulate after Steinman filed a notice of intent to sue in California under Proposition 65, the state’s landmark toxics law. Prior legal actions filed by the California Attorney General against other companies indicate that the actionable level under Prop. 65 for 1,4-dioxane in personal care products is above 10 ppm.

“We’re glad Procter & Gamble is reducing the levels of carcinogenic contaminants in Herbal Essences,” said Lisa Archer, national coordinator of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics from the Breast Cancer Fund. “It’s a good step, but even more is needed to assure customers that P&G products are free of toxic chemicals.”

1,4-dioxane is considered a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and a known animal carcinogen by the National Toxicology Program. It is also on California’s Proposition 65 list of chemicals known to cause cancer. The Food and Drug Administration does not require 1,4-dioxane to be listed on labels of personal care products, defining it as a contaminant rather than an ingredient because it is produced during manufacturing.

“Due to inadequate regulations, consumers are in the dark about what’s really in the products they put on their bodies,” Archer said. “We need new laws that require companies to be transparent about the chemicals in their products, and to eliminate hazardous chemicals. Contaminants like 1,4-dioxane are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to problematic chemicals in personal care products.”

At a press conference on Friday, Steinman also released new analysis of 1,4-dioxane in laundry detergents. The highest levels were found in P&G brands, including Tide (55 ppm), Tide Free (29 ppm) and Ivory Snow (31 ppm).

Steinman’s product tests are part of a continuing study that has analyzed more than 150 consumer products for 1,4-dioxane. Many brands have been found to be free of the toxic contaminant.

“Clearly, it’s possible to make great products without 1,4-dioxane,” said Archer. “That’s what all companies should be doing.”

An Apple A Day Keeps The Scalpel Away

http://www.belgraviacentre.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/apple4.jpg

This Rare Swiss Apple Fights Signs of Aging, Claims Skin Experts.

Stem cells are all the buzz nowadays. Thankfully, it’s not about slathering embryonic stem cells on skin. "Skincare specialists are not using embryonic stem cells; it is impossible to incorporate live materials into a skincare product," explains Jeanette Jacknin M.D.  The buzz is around plant stem cells protecting the longevity of human stem cells.

Mibelle Biochemistry, a cosmeceutical company, was one of the first on the scene with the award winning PhytoCellTec Malus Domestica. It is based on the callus cells of a rare Swiss apple tree, Uttwiler Spätlauber, known for its fruit’s longevity. When a plant is wounded, the surrounding cells revert back into stem cells, forming callus cells. After the wound has healed, they return to their former state and build new tissue. They are totipotent cells which are known as cells with ‘total potential,’ meaning they can develop into any cell type and have the capacity to form an entire organism. These totipotent plant cells are the technology behind Apple Stem Cells; they stimulate and protect human stem cells while reducing wrinkle depth. They also reportedly have benefits in hair care, preventing hair loss and graying.

http://img03.blogcu.com/v2/images/editor/e/s/e/esenkal/589002578849084_1260391526.jpg

Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. Unlike embryonic stem cells, adult or multipotent  stem cells are endogenous. They are present within our bodies and serve to maintain and repair the tissues in which they are found. Adult stem cells are found in many organs and tissues, including the skin. In fact, human skin is the largest repository of adult stem cells in the body. Skin stem cells reside in the basal layer of the epidermis where they remain dormant until they are activated by tissue injury or disease, explains Jeanette Jacknin M.D who spoke at 17th World Congress on Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine in Orlando, Florida, April 23-25, 2009

There are several companies with skin serum products out usin this rare Swiss Apple. The Skin Stem Cell Serum for example, (Mallus Domestica) is a liposomal preparation based on the stem cells of that rare Swiss apple. It employs a novel technology enabling the cultivation of a rare and endangered species of apple, the Uttwiler Spatlauber. Thanks to this technology plant stem cells are now able to ensure longevity of skin cells. The skin serum claims to combat chronological aging of the skin.

Apple Stem Cells are one of the first of what is sure to be an onslaught of plant stem cells to emerge in the personal care industry. We already have our eye on up-coming selections. We’ll keep you posted.

Greening Hollywood And Digital Media

Greening Hollywood: Digital Media Doesn't Get the Message

While Hollywood gets global attention this week for its self-congratulatory handing out of golden statues, the industry won't be winning any awards for being an environmental star. A new survey reveals that entertainment and digital media companies aren't following the script for being as green as celebrities would have us believe.

When it comes to pollution and energy consumption, Tinseltown is pretty brown. According to a 2006 study from the UCLA Institute of the Environment, the film and television and film industry is one of the major polluters in California, trailing only the petroleum industry in some categories.

And it's not just blowing up cars and building temporary sets that are contributing to the entertainment industry's footprint. Creating special effects and animations requires networks of power-hungry computers, while saving and streaming all of those images and sounds involves countless servers and storage devices.

Released on the day after the Oscars, the "IT Sustainability Imperatives in Digital Media & Entertainment Business" survey says that only 24 percent of industry IT professionals rated the industry's sustainability efforts thus far as worth of an "A" or "B." Less than half of the more than 100 information technology (IT) professionals in digital media who responded could verify that their organizations had corporate sustainability initiatives.

The survey, which was jointly produced by the Think Eco-logical initiative and the Global Renewable Energy and Environmental Network (GREEN), found that the industry's actions have not lived up to their understanding of the importance of managing an organization's environmental footprint.

Nearly 90 percent of people surveyed said that having network servers that consider the environment is important. However, more than three-quarters said their IT departments were spending 10 percent or less of their budget on green initiatives.

The report did cite media & entertainment companies NBC, Apple, Sony, and Warner Brothers as having the best reputations for "Eco-Logical" practices.

George Skaff, the vice president of Marketing at Rackable Systems, which hosts the Think Ecological website, said greening digital media should also benefit the bottom line. "At the end of the day, [greening your IT] should not cost you more money," he said. Skaff said that buying all new equipment isn't needed either. Companies can use their existing infrastructure more wisely, such as improving the ways hardware is stacked and cooled.

The digital media energy footprint is projected to grow faster than a blockbuster's production budget in the coming years. Between 2005 and 2012, the digital storage capacity for the film and television is expected to grow tenfold, according to a study by analyst firm Coughlin Associates. This is in part due to the conversion of Hollywood's archives from analog to digital, along with the creation of new online digital video streaming services.

The survey was created to spur conversation about the topic and to enable companies to share ideas and questions about how to become more energy efficient. Both GREEN, which is an interest group of the Business Performance Management (BPM) Forum, and Think Eco-logical will work with their members and advisory boards to encourage the adoption of clean energy and sustainability solutions. "The next phase is to communicate directly with [participating] organizations and provide them with the means to push the agenda, including materials, content, and the means to communicate the message," said GREEN director Derek Kober.

Kober said GREEN will conduct webinars on subjects such as how to make the business case for greening IT and how to get started with a corporate sustainability initiative. He hopes that survey's findings will prompt discussion and a grass roots movement where people will blog about what they are doing to address their environmental impact.

Greening Hollywood And Oscar's Causes

From The Cove to Haven House to Getty House, L.A. people were out in full force all week leading up to Oscar Weekend.  Advocacy of important, social issues seemed to take home the crowning glory this year - dolphin advocates and their plea for the humane treatment of animals, human rights advocates and their plea for the humane treatment of humanity [like Sandra Bullock] and the right to tell the story when they observe otherwise. Peace advocates, like Kathryn Bigelow...Green advocates, like James Cameron...
