A-List Celebrities With Green Businesses

by Eliza Morgan

Not all celebrities are about Hollywood glamour, fast cars, and making money only. In fact, some of the most successful celebrities are about quite the opposite: saving the environment. Celebrities who have been in the business for some time are now opting to use their influence to create environmental programs and business solutions. Here is a sampling of some of the world’s most famous people today, working to create a better world for tomorrow through business:

Kevin Costner was the perfect personal defender in Bodyguard, and now he is defending the planet as well. His environmental protection business Ocean Therapy Solutions has spent over fifteen years designing a new centrifuge that can clean up about 2,000 barrels of oil out of seawater every day. After the BP oil spill, the company used Ocean Therapy Solutions to clean much of the coastal spill.

While Cameron may be known for her goofy roles in some of the most beloved modern
comedies, this funny girl sees nothing to joke about when it comes to environmental
preservation. She has recently launched a new show on MTV, Trippin, where she heads around the world to experience first-hand some of the most dire environmental needs.

Best known for her roles in The Notebook and Mean Girls Rachel McAdams is one of the top talents in young Hollywood. She is also an avid environmentalist who prefers to unplug, ride her bike, and recycle everything possible. She has also started her own site Green is Sexy to show others how to do the same.

Willie Nelson is not only a legendary country singer, he has also always had a fondness for the open road. It’s no surprise that he co-founded a biodiesel fuel company that produces a soybean and vegetable fuel named Bio Willie in an effort to reduce the United States’ dependence of foreign oil and minimize the threat to the environment. The fuel is currently sold by Earth Biodiesel Inc.

Daryl Hannah is a beauty icon and talented actress who is also very environmentally active. She owns her own online store Love Life Goods where she sells sustainable, recycled and organic lifestyle products. From beauty treats, to clothing, to composters, this site covers it.

Ed Begley, Jr. has been a longtime A-list celeb and many people know he has also been a longtime proponent of environmentally friendly lifestyles. Once he rejected a limo to drive him to the Academy Awards, preferring to show up right on time on his bicycle. He currently owns a company that manufactures and sells a line of green cleaning products, Begley’s Best. They are made from completely natural, but effective, ingredients and are guaranteed to be non-harmful for the environment, for animals, and for humans.

Hollywood's Green Moguls Take Home Top Awards

The green carpet rolled out for The Environmental Media Association's EMA Awards this Saturday at the Warner Bros. movie lot, which was hosted by Olivia Munn and Jason Ritter. The event, which was completely plastic water bottle free, honored environmental films and television series, tackled topics such as alternative fuel sources and even featured a live Native American Dance troupe.

Celebrity guests included the brilliant James Cameron and his beautiful and green conscious wife, Suzy Amis Cameron (famous for her own green fashion choices). They were both on hand when Avatar snagged the night's award for Feature Film. On the green carpet, Cameron explained the significance of how his film was shot and its overall environmental impact.

"Let's look at the big picture," he said. "Avatar was a film that took place in an enormous rain forest. Can't shoot big battle scenes in a rain forest. It was 100 percent CGI. There were a few people playing multiple roles so the footprint compared to the visual impact was very tiny. But ultimately it's a multi-hundred million dollar movie, there are a lot of people working on computers, and those computers are absorbing energy. There's no way you can say this movie was made with one watt of power. But you have to weigh the value of the film with the environmental impact in the public consciousness." - James Cameron,  on making Avatar

Other stars gave us the scoop on how their television sets are enviro-friendly and waste-free. Sarah Drew from Grey's Anatomy took tips from a fellow star on the set: "I was very inspired by Sandra Oh, because she never uses paper products on set," she told us on the red carpet. "She uses her own mugs that say "Oh" on it, and she has her own plates. I went out and bought a reusable mug that looks like one of those coffee cups. I also bring my water bottle to set every day."

Katrina Bowden took us inside 30 Rock's very serious green policies;  "Our show is green, we have done away with all plastic bottles," she said. "At the beginning of the season we get our own mugs with our names on it, there's recycling bins everywhere, efficient light bulbs everywhere. The same thing I am doing at home too."

Mark Paul Gosselaar, on the other hand, told us it hasn't always been easy to keep a set's waste and energy consumption down, but that now being green on set is the norm. "So much so that when they gave my character a car, I asked that they made it a Prius" he told us about his time on 'Raising the Bar'. "They said "we'll get you a Prius!" but I don't think that would have happened years ago."

But if a film or TV series still finds it difficult to keep their carbon footprint in check, they might want to follow green guru Ed Begley Jr.'s guidance. "Contact EMA and get that green checklist for production," he told us. "It's simple things like recycling on the set, not printing scripts - if you have to print them, do so on recycled paper. Use pdf files. As an actor, I like to use pdfs. Shuttling people around, get a low mileage vehicle and more fuel efficient shuttles, buy green energy, have efficient lighting in the production office. Really it's as easy as checking out the EMA list."

In addition to "Avatar," "30 Rock," the documentary "Gasland" and Begley's "Living With Ed" took home top honors of the night.

Beginning World Water Day (March 22nd) Tapped’s Producer Sarah Olson and Director Stephanie Soechtig will take their mobile showroom on the road, collecting pledges from people to reduce their bottled water use and trading empty plastic water bottles for reusable stainless steel Klean Kanteens.  This mobile translucent recycling container will begin the “Get Off The (h20) Bottle” tour in Los Angeles with an empty cabin that will be filled with the public’s empty water bottles by the time the team ends up in New York City on Earth Day (April 22nd, 2010).

Director Stephanie Soechtig says about the tour, “1,500 bottles of water end up in landfills every second – that’s 30 million bottles of water a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water - so if that means we have to drive city to city to get the point across than that’s what we’ll do!”

The stops along the tour will include San Diego, CA (March 22nd), Tempe, AZ (March 23rd), Tucson, AZ (March 24th), Santa Fe, NM (March 26th), Salida, CO (March 27th), Denver, CO (March 30th), Boulder, CO (March 31st), Omaha, NE (April 2nd), Lawrence, KS (April 5th) Norman, OK (April 6th), Dallas, TX (April 7th), Austin, TX (April 8th), Houston, TX (April 9th), New Orleans, LA (April 10th), Atlanta, GA (April 13th), Nashville, TN (April 14th), Bloomington, IN (April 15th), Chicago, IL (April 16th), Goshen, IN (April 17th), Washington, DC (April 19-20) and New York City (April  21-23nd).

Tour Sponsors include Klean Kanteen, Food and Water Watch, Multi-Pure water filters, and Aveda.

ABOUT TAPPED

Is access to clean drinking water a basic human right, or a commodity that should be bought and sold like any other article of commerce? Stephanie Soechtig's debut feature is an unflinching examination of the big business of bottled water.

From the producers of Who Killed the Electric Car and I.O.U.S.A., this timely documentary is a behind-the-scenes look into the unregulated and unseen world of an industry that aims to privatize and sell back the one resource that ought never to become a commodity: our water.

From the plastic production to the ocean in which so many of these bottles end up, this inspiring documentary trails the path of the bottled water industry and the communities which were the unwitting chips on the table. A powerful portrait of the lives affected by the bottled water industry, this revelatory film features those caught at the intersection of big business and the public's right to water.
