Toxins in Our Everyday Body Care and How to Avoid Them

Image002
By Gillian Deacon

By the time she heads out the front door ready to begin her day, the modern woman has spritzed, sudsed and slathered herself in more than 127 different chemicals, many of them toxic.  Over 23,000 chemicals are registered for use in the Canadian market, and about 300 new ones are added to that list every year!  Many of the creams and potions we depend on are made with a staggering number of mystery chemicals, many of which are more toxic than beautifying.  The average woman eats a third of a pound of lipstick a year; that’s a lot of less-than-tasty chemicals to ingest!

So, how can you get smart at the cosmetics counter and go green from head to toe?  Eco-expert Gillian Deacon will help you identify and understand the toxins and preservatives that are bad for your body and damaging to the earth, including formaldehyde in deodorant, nail polish, soap, shampoo, and shaving cream; coal tar in hair dyes; lead in lipsticks; and many more.  Her tips will guide you through the minefield of the cosmetics aisle, helping you choose the best options to keep yourself looking fabulous while safeguarding your health.

Packed with over 200 healthy and eco-friendly personal care and beauty ideas, There’s Lead in Your Lipstick includes:

·         Toxins and preservatives to avoid

·         How to read ingredient labels

·         Fabulous products available to keep you fresh and glowing – the natural way

Hurley & Boyd For The Whales

Brandon_boyd_evite

Hurley recently collaborated with Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd on a capsule collection launching next month. Boyd is a long time supporter of ocean related causes, which is reflected in the artwork he created for the collaboration. Boyd’s trash pale whale features an image of a whale that has swallowed plastic water bottles that have carelessly been dumped into our world’s oceans.

The collection is environmentally friendly using 100% recycled cotton, made from the cuttings and pulp of re-claimed cotton. The hangtags will be printed using soy ink and recycled twine will replace the plastic attachments. Customers who purchase any Hurley items are eligible to receive a limited edition BPA free recycled water bottle featuring Brandon Boyd’s artwork for $5 available exclusively at participating Buckle retailers. Hurley is donating over 560 of these water bottles to Buckle employees to make the office single use plastic water bottle free.

The Hurley X Brandon Boyd collection will retail between $28.00 and $32.00 with 100% of the proceeds from the sales of the collection benefiting H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everywhere), a 501(c)3 non-profit focused on involving artists and their contributions in campaigns, programs and events to support existing social projects that promote education and peace around the world.

New Book Reveals Complex Morality Systems in Non-Human Animals

Evolution-Based Theory Challenges Conventional Thinking

“Dale Peterson adds originality and astonishing clarity to a discussion that has engaged science and philosophy in sometimes heated debate. This book is a delight to read. The Moral Lives of Animals will change the way many think of animals, and it will vindicate what others have always known intuitively. It deserves to be an instant bestseller.”—Jane Goodall

“The Moral Lives of Animals is without question the most fascinating book I’ve read in many, many years—a marvelously written page-turner about an important subject which until now has received little if any attention…There’s a special place in the hearts of many of us for books that express the ‘one-ness’ of life on earth, and this book tops them all.”—Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, author of The Hidden Life of Dogs

“Instead of humanity having developed morality from scratch, by means of its superior intellect, things may well have started simpler. In our fellow primates, we already recognize many of the tendencies that gave rise to the moral emotions. Dale Peterson does an excellent and engaging job explaining how the one may have led to the other. In doing so, he places us closer to other animals than many a moral philosopher would ever admit.”—Frans de Waal, author of The Age of Empathy

Wild elephants walking along a trail stop and spontaneously try to protect and assist a weak and dying fellow elephant. Lab rats, finding other rats caged nearby in distressing circumstances, proceed to rescue them. A chimpanzee in a zoo loses his own life trying to save an unrelated infant who has fallen into a watery moat.  These scenes (actually observed) are often dismissed as odd happenstance after a moment of mild astonishment or simple amusement.  But could there be more?

For centuries, we humans have viewed ourselves as the sole possessors of moral sense.  However, in his new book, The Moral Lives of Animals, critically-acclaimed author Dale Peterson, Ph.D shows that morality in non-human animals not only exists, but can be—and is—a complex system of inclinations and inhibitions, much like our own.

KRAKEN:

The Curious, Exciting, and Slightly Disturbing Science of Squid

“Taken as a whole, Kraken amounts to an episodic argument for the coolness of cephalopods. Luckily, Williams’ anecdotes and historical forays are fun, and her writing style is ideal for general-interest readers of many ages.”

--Daniel Strain, Science News

Kraken extracts pure joy, intellectual exhilaration, and deep wonder from the most unlikely of places—squid. It is hard to read Wendy Williams’s luminous account and not feel the thrill of discovery of the utterly profound connections we share with squid and all other living things on the planet.”

Neil Shubin, author of the national bestseller, Your Inner Fish

“Wendy Williams’s Kraken has the power to change your worldview about these creatures of the sea, while telling the gripping, wholly comprehensible story of the ways in which these animals have changed human medical history.”

Mark J. Spalding, President, The Ocean Foundation

For hundreds of years, squid—giant, colossal, and otherwise—have been demonized as mysterious monsters of the deep. Even today they maintain a mystique, but scientists are gradually discovering some of their long-hidden secrets. Squid have been the source of some of medicine’s most important breakthroughs, and without them, neurosurgeons would be a little less well trained, obstetricians a little less well informed, and geriatricians much less knowledgeable about the aging process. Squid can help scientists cure Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, develop new antibiotics, and boost the health of babies born by cesarean section.  www.BlueDotLiterary.com

The film is a "love letter to Paris" and will screen opening night, May 11th, on the Croisette the same night that it opens on screens across France.  Robert De Niro is presiding as judge over the Film Festival this year, its 64th, as part of a Franco-American celebration and the celebrating of De Niro's  Tribeca Film Festival's 10th year.

Greening Hollywood was recently privileged to a conversation with co-producer of Midnight in Paris, Raphael Benoliel, who, theoretically, supports the notion of green film sets and eco-friendly film production. France is ramping up in a big way towards Eco Productions and green seems to be the talk of the town. Let's see if we can add some green to the Cote d'Azur!

Created from an astonishing 500,000 hand-painted frames of animation, MIA AND THE MIGOO is a stunningly beautiful and thrilling family adventure that pits a plucky, wild haired young heroine Mia against profit-hungry developers, with the future of life on Earth in the balance.  One night Mia has a premonition. So after saying a few words of parting at her mother's grave, she sets out on a journey across mountains and jungles in search of her father, who has been trapped in a landslide at a disaster-plagued construction site on a remote tropical lake. In the middle of the lake stands the ancient Tree of Life, watched over by innocent, bumbling forest spirits called the Migoo, who grow and change shape as they please, morphing from small childlike beings to petulant giants. It is the Migoo who have been disrupting the construction to protect this sacred site – and now together with Mia they join in a fight to find Mia's father and save the Tree.

MIA AND THE MIGOO opens March 25 for an exclusive one week engagement at New York’s IFC Center, where GKIDS has opened previous animated films Azur and Asmar, Sita Sings the Blues, The Secret of Kells, and Summer Wars.  The film will then open nationally on Earth Day, April 22, in partnership with Earth Day Network, the environmental organization behind the global Earth Day celebration.  All theatrical proceeds from the film’s opening weekend will support Earth Day Network's Canopy Project, a world-wide tree-planting initiative. Each tree planted counts towards A Billion Acts of Green®, the world's largest environmental campaign.

Commuun Paris Runway Show F/W '11

By Paige Donner

Commuun is one of the few Designer labels showing in Paris regularly who sport an ethical fashion approach. And like their famous colleague (Stella) their front foot is on design with their inspiration derived from nature, a respect they carry forward into their fashion designs from collection to collection.

When asked backstage what is the one constant in their collections, Iku Furudate and Kaito Hori responded that sourcing organic textiles is one of their trademarks for their collections. This year's runway shows in Paris saw a lot of sheers, material that Commuun often uses in their collections.

Many of the fashion label's fans at this year's runway show in Paris held on March 7th agreed that this year's collection bears witness to the design duo's maturation and growth into their world-class label. Some of the textiles they used - all organically sourced - included an inversed velvet. The pops of color in the collection, too, are nature inspired and their name has nothing to do with "common" but rather references the concepts of community, communion and communication.

The NY trained, Tokyo originating design duo of Iku Furudate and Kaito Hori launched their label in 2005 which is also when they first began showing in Paris. In 2007 they won the LVMH and Longchamp ANDAM prizes.
